How to choose a physiotherapy equipment supplier: manufacturer or dealer, and the questions that settle it

What separates the best physiotherapy equipment suppliers from the rest is not the brand name on the brochure but what is written on the quotation. A buyer's checklist for clinics, hospitals and tenders.

Search for physiotherapy equipment and the results are a wall of listings that all look the same. Most are dealers reselling the same few factories' work. A few are the factories. The difference decides what happens in year three, when a castor fails or a motor stops — so here is how to tell them apart, and what to ask before you sign.

Manufacturer or dealer — why it matters

A manufacturer cut, welded and finished the frame. It can change a dimension for your room, supply the exact spare, and tell you how the unit was built because it built it. A dealer adds a margin and a phone number between you and that knowledge. For electrotherapy, shockwave and treadmills, an authorised distributor is the right route because the brand's warranty runs through them — XINIX, for example, manufactures its steel range and is an authorised distributor of BTL, Biotech, Hercules and Rymo, and says which is which on every page. The red flag is a supplier who will not say.

The six questions that separate suppliers

• "Do you manufacture this, or supply it?" Expect a straight answer and, for manufactured items, the works address.
• "What is the item code on the quotation?" A controlled code (XINIX's look like XST-TBL-035) means the quotation, the invoice and the crate describe the same unit. No code usually means a generic import.
• "Are warranty and service terms written on the quotation?" If they are only said on the phone, they do not exist.
• "Who installs, who trains the staff, and who do I call?" One number, named, is the answer you want. Publishedn hospital data shows a large share of equipment downtime is solved by training alone.
• "Can you answer a tender specification clause by clause?" For institutions this is the whole job; a supplier who cannot will cost you the bid.
• "Can I see it working?" A demonstration — in person, on video, or as an interactive model — before the purchase order, not after.

What "best brand" really means for equipment that is used for a decade

Rankings of "best physiotherapy equipment brands" are mostly listings ranked by who paid for position. For treatment tables, tilt tables, standing frames and gait equipment the variables that matter are fabrication quality, upholstery, adjustability, service response and parts availability — none of which appear in a listing title. Judge the supplier by the six questions above and by the quotation in your hand.

A practical buying sequence

List the patients and tasks the room must serve → choose product families by clinical goal (our catalogue is filed that way) → request quotations by item code from two or three suppliers → compare what is written: configuration, warranty, service, installation, training → ask for references you can phone.
